Recently I jumped on an opportunity to head down to the botteomest most part of NZ and help support 'Comedy Cure kids' with their endeavor to raise money for red nose day by riding Bluff (bottomest) to Cape Reinga (topestest) of NZ. Basically there was a relay through the country were someone is riding all the time; GIANT my sponsor had been awesome and supplied the bikes for those willing to partake but didn't have a bike of their own. SOO for the first leg of Bluff-Christchurch we set off and did what we had to in order to get these eager go getters on the road.
The people doing this were great and so eager even if they had a less desirable leg at 2am in the morning. I managed a 40km leg from 'muckknowswhere' to 'somewhere40kmsaway' which was cool BUT being at 7pm in pitch black means that my sights were only as picturesque as the range of the headlights of the follow car.
We handed over the reigns of GIANT responsibility to the one of the other chaps to carry on support from Christchurch to Picton (top of north island). In doing this, Gayle (whom I was wing man for in the car) and i rushed off to the Chch round of the NZ CX series where we had 25 minutes to change, register, get out bikes going, ride the course and get slightly warmed up. THEN we proceeded to smash ourselves along with many others around the course for the next 50 minutes.
By the time I got home i was well buggered and ready for a descent night sleep and real food.
AWESOME times and some great people!
THINGS I LEART:
-I don't like raw oysters
- At 6am on 3rd day on the road 'Wild bean' coffee will do
- I love sleep
- Days in car isn't greatest race prep
- People are awesome when faced with a challenge bigger than they'd usually chew
- There is now a trail that looks like cock n balls somewhere in chch left by CX race (great pre thought)
